16 Completely Life-Changing Things Australians Can Thank Gough Whitlam For

RIP Gough.

Gough Whitlam dead: Martyr for a moment, hero for a lifetime

The manner of his defeat has confused the Whitlam legacy. He is remembered as much for his going, which made him a martyr for many Australians, as for his achievements and the new sense of identity he brought the nation.

Senator John Faulkner asked in 2002: “Are you comfortable being an icon and…

"Men and Women of Australia! The decision we will make for our country on 2 December is a choice between the past and the future, between the habits and fears of the past, and the demands and opportunities of the future. There are moments in history when the whole fate and future of nations can be decided by a single decision. For Australia, this is such a time."

Gough Whitlam, 13 November 1972, Labor Party Policy Speech.

Former Prime Minister of Australia, Edward Gough Whitlam (1916 - 2014) has died today at the age of 98.  He was the 21st Prime MInister of Australia, from 1972 to 1975 and the Leader of the Labor Party from 1967 to 1977.  He led Labor to power for the first time in 23 years at the 1972 election but was controversially dismissed by the Governor General Sir John Kerr at the climax of the 1975 Australian constitutional crisis.

The State Library of New South Wales holds many photographs and sources relating to Gough Whitlam and the Australian Labor Party.

if you had to drop out of a class you are not a failure

if you had to take time off school you are not a failure

if you had to leave school for good you are not a failure

your worth is not determined by academia and this goes doubly so for disabled people and others for whom school is set against them
